So just like playing the children's card game of 'Snap' here is my offering.
However I think that I can 'trump' yours Laurie with my five cherubs to your three.....

William Thomas Ecclestone was affectionately known as Jolly Jumbo, he weighed 38 stone and was regarded as 'The Second Heaviest Man in the World' at that time.

He was the owner of the Canterbury Arms Public House in West Kilburn, London and a local celebrity who needed a special pony and trap to move around in.

It is with some irony, that as a young man in the Army, he introduced exercises so effective that they became standard training and he later became a renown trainer of runners and boxers in the area.

Angel of Death

The Angel of Death is the title given to this monument of George William Lancaster and his wife Louisa Mary who died on this day in 1922.

'Love Lives Forever'

The memorial was sculpted by Sydney March in Portland stone and Bronze and is a Grade II listed monument in East Sheen Cemetery. This work was influenced by North Italian tomb sculpture ~ especially Leonardo Bistolfi ~ and is considered one of the most significant examples of funerary sculpture.

The Lancasters were a north-country family who made their money in coal mining.

Their monument was described by Hugh Meller, author of London Cemeteries: An Illustrated Guide & Gazetteer, as 'arguably the most dramatic sculpture in any of London's cemeteries'. I have to admit that it is one of my favourites too.

I love this little monument because of it's unique charm. As it clutches a flower to it's chest, I cannot remember ever seeing a cherub in flight, like this one. They are more often depicted as standing. I wonder if the raised hand, had a finger pointing heavenward ?

Wednesday's Child

I came across this memorial at Manor Park and was instantly struck by this cherubs face, so I ended up taking quite a few photos from different angles. It fascinated me because it appears to be such a very 'real' if somewhat serious face and quite unlike the usual generic faces on most angels and cherubs.
I really felt saddened when I finally left it, almost as though I was abandoning it in some kind of way. So if the face is too old to be that of baby Joan Irene Simms, could it be that of a child the stonemanson knew and modeled it on instead ?
